Brian Pinkney in his Brooklyn studio

September 19, 2009

Brian Pinkney is the illustrator of several highly-praised picture books including The Faithful Friend, In the Time of the Drums, and Duke Ellington. He’s also the author of The Adventures of Sparrowboy and Hush, Little Baby, among others. We visited his studio on Stuyvesant Avenue to talk about creativity, children’s stories and why playing the drums really is part of the writing and illustration process.

Totally agree with Brian Pinkney- my all-time favourite last line from any children’s book is “Their work is to play. And they play beautifully.” From Karla Kuskin’s “When the Philharmonia got Dressed with Marc Simont’s beautifully telling illustrations. Sad Karla has left us…Will Marc Simont be interviewed here?
