New interview: Daniel Handler, aka “Lemony Snicket,” San Francisco

March 24, 2010

In Los Angeles last week for meetings on a new project, we took the scenic route along the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco, where we had the pleasure and amusement of meeting Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, whose “Series of Unfortunate Events” books have been one of the best-selling in history, more than 60 million in all.

In the living room of his home atop a hill overlooking San Francisco on a crystal clear spring day, he took us through an amusing and illuminating discussion that touched upon the birth of Lemony Snicket, his debt to the classic writers, and his views on the value of children’s literature.

Since his protagonists are the Beaudelaire children, here’s a snippet of our chat about the 19th-century French author  Charles Beaudelaire and his influence.
