Delaney, Willems, Scieszka and Neely in the post-screening chat

Library of the Early Mind screened Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Southern Festival of Books, with a lively discussion afterwards that touched upon Friday’s New York Times article about the decline of the picture book. The article spoke of the picture book as “languishing” as parents pushed young children into reading at an earlier age. The festival, spread out in downtown from the War Memorial Auditorium, was very busy. And despite blue skies and warm temps, the Nashville Public Library’s 236-seat Auditorium was filled for the screening.

Best-selling children’s authors Mo Willems and Jon Scieszka held court in the panel moderated by Vanderbilt University professor Ann Neely, and which included the director of the film, Ted Delaney. Willems participated in the film; Scieszka’s collaborator Lane Smith is also featured.

Many thanks to those who attended and participated in the question-and-answer session.

The next screening will be our official premiere at the Askwith Forum, Harvard University, Oct. 19.
